God's Grace Church
Godís Grace Church was founded in January of 1981 by the late Dist. Elder Detmer Timberlake. He was called to the ministry in 1978, and then First Lady Jeanette Timberlake in 1990. The late Bishop Phillip Taylor, Sr. was their mentor and founding father. They were saved under the late Bishop John S. Holly of the Apostolic Faith Church in Chicago, Illinois.
Godís Grace Church held its first service in the Gary Neighborhood Service Center. The pastorís family and five other members were in the congregation.
The church was then financed with the pastorís own resources. The food pantry, established by Jeanette Timberlake in 1982, was financed by the first lady until the church was able to bear the expense. From the beginning, a nice meal was prepared each Sunday by the Pastor, at no expense to the people. Today, that tradition continues.
Our first church, located at 2142 West 11th Avenue was purchased in 1981, with the help of God and the members. Within a few years, we outgrew the facility. Dist. Elder Timberlake, a man with a vision, looked to God for a larger church. We moved into our present location in December of 1987, and since that time have purchased the vacant land north of the church. Before the late Dist. Elder Timberlakeís passing, he envisioned a Senior Care Facility, a Bishopís Store (for the needy), a Gymnasium for the youth, a Credit Union, and an Employment Office.
In an effort toward bringing this vision to fruition, on Sunday, June 18, 1995, by the unction of God, Dist. Elder Timberlake called upon the membership to pledge money towards our mortgage balance of $63,395.09.ON SEPTEMBER 1, 1995 WITH THE HELP OF GOD AND THE MEMBERSHIP, WE PAID OFF OUR MORTGAGE IN TEN WEEKS! Dist. Elder Timberlakeís vision is still alive as we strive to fulfill what was foreseen by him and GOD.
